WEP - Wireless Equivalent Pricacy
WEP was the original Wi-Fi encryption method, and is easily broken.
WEP was part of the original 802.11b specification.
Standard WEP uses 64-bit encryption, with a 40-bit key,
128-bit WEP uses a 104-bit key, and was made legal for export in 1996.
WEP is not really very secure.
The current (9/2006) best public wireless encryption is WPA2.

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) & WPA-PSK
Normal WPA is called "enterprise mode" and requires an authenticating server.
WPA-PSK is WPA in Pre-Shared Key mode, and uses the same RC4 encryption cipher,
but in a more hack-resistant manner. It's TRIP (temporal Key Intregtiy Porotocl)
technology relies on mathematical scrambling formulas to dedect key tampering.
WPA was intended as a short-term solution, until 802.11i was ratified.
WPA2 inplments the full mandatory 802.11i standards, but is not compatible with
older network cards.
WI-FI Protected Access
WPA - wikipedia
WPA2 - 802.11i (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2)
WPA2 is, so far, (2005) the strongest wireless securityavailable. It uses
the AES encryption algorithm. It is often hard or impossible to upgrade existing WPA
hardware to WPA2. WPA2 usually requires an additional chip to off-load
the encrypt/decrypt functions, else the throughput drops dramatically.
WPA2 utilizes CCMP (an algorithm based on AES).
WPA2 also utilizes the Michael algorithm and TKIP.
Windows XP supported WPA2 in May of 2005.
Wikipedia states that as of March 13, 2006, WPA2 certification
is required for Wi-Fi certified devices" (see Wikipedia
