“Coleman's novel brings to
life the long-obscure but fascinating figure of the assassin of President
McKinley. It is an opportunity for a lively discussion of that also-obscure
philosophy of anarchism…. Readers will enjoy this unusual novel.”

Just 100 years ago, on
September 6, 1901, the news shocked the nation: anarchist Leon Czolgosz had
shot and fatally wounded President William McKinley. Meet Jon Parker, medical
student, aspiring alienist, and intern at New York’s Auburn State Prison where
Czolgosz awaits a date with the electric chair. With the excitement of the
assassination and pending execution swirling around him, Parker engages
Czolgosz in a series of rudimentary psychoanalysis sessions. His goal: to
understand the life, motivations, and political philosophy of this enigmatic
figure. Was Czolgosz sane? Was he a bona fide anarchist? To answer these
questions, Parker must enter the unfamiliar world of anarchism and class
struggle, face the probing affections of the young feminist Lucy Gerin, and,
ultimately, confront his own inner demons.
