DSM-IV "Gender Identity Disorder" (GID) Revisions (&rarr DSM-V):
    Transgender-Related Summary / Overview

    • uh-oh: Early alert / commentary by Mercedes Allen, May 05, 2008.

    • The tragic story of David Reimer, a patient of the infamous Dr. John Money, offers the ultimate cautionary tale in the context of the proposed DSM-IV gender identity revisions. I highly recommend that you watch - if at all possible - the television shows "MSNBC Reports: Face in the Mirror" as well as "Born a Boy, Brought Up a Girl."

Interestingly, Dr. Money provides a historical basis for the mindset at Johns Hopkins University regarding transgender issues ... In the beginning of his career, Dr. Paul McHugh set out to close the Gender Clinic at JHU, and has been one of our most vocal detractors).

    • Upon reading more about the DSM-IV GID revisions panel controversy and Drs. Blanchard, Zucker, et al. (as well as previous readings), I have found that the Transsexual Roadmap web site has *abundant* material (much more than I can list here) relelevant to this - and all other - transgender-related issues!

You can subscribe and/or view their Comments section, and use their embedded Google search field to quickly find material posted at TS Roadmap that is of particular interest. For example, typing "dsm" (without the quotation marks, of course) brings up 229 hits [as of May 31, 2008], including:

      • Kenneth Zucker & APA Task Force on Gender Identity, Gender Variance, and Intersex Conditions (TSRoadmap, May 19, 2008)

        Target: public.affairs@apa.org, apa@psych.org
Signature goal: 10,000 signatures (4.411 signatures as of May 17, 2008!)

"On the Task Force, named as Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders Chair, we find Dr. Kenneth Zucker,
from Toronto's infamous Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH, formerly the Clarke Institute).

Dr. Zucker is infamous for utilizing reparative therapy to "cure" gender-variant children.

Named to his work group, we find Zuckers mentor, Dr. Ray Blanchard, Head of Clinical Sexology Services at CAMH and creator of
the theory of autogynephilia, categorized as a paraphilia and defined as man paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the
thought or image of himself as a woman.

Also Dr Ann Lawrence, a supporter of his JUNK SCIENCE, is understood to be in consideration as an alternate member.

We, the undersigned hereby object to their inclusion on this committee, and object to the hurtful theories they promote.

In order to have any credibility in the field of gender identity, the DSM must not include discounted theories or junk science.

We ask that they be removed at once as members."

    • A Yahoo Discussion Group has been established, the Gender Identity Coalition:

"As you may or may not be aware of, a working board of recommendation has been formed to provide input for changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the resulting changes will be included in the new version (DSM-V). The already tenuous definitions for Gender Identity Disorder are in great jeopardy, with the appointment to the Sexual Behavior and Gender Disorders component of this, with the likes of Dr. Blanchard, Daniel F. Zucker, with Michael Bailey, Dr. Ann Lawrence and Alice Dreger as "advisors." We are forming a working committee and network of Transgender and allied voices to help mitigate the far reaching and potentially damaging influence of members of the Psychotherapeutic community who have shown an obvious disregard for the diversity and dignity of those who are transitioning genders or who have done so, to include Hormone Replacement Therapy and Gender Reassignment Surgery. The entire removal of Gender Identity from the DSM is an ultimate goal.

The above individuals believe that individual Gender ID (to include Transsexuality and Intersexed conditions) is nothing more than systems and workings of paraphillia, deviancy, a "delusion of sexual identity", even more specific: either all Transsexual/Transgendered individuals are either an extreme form of "Homosexuality" (including the shaky theory of "Early Homosexual-Transsexual" dichotomy), Autogynephillic (a male paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman). The influence on the outcome of the new DSM-V by the people mentioned above, will prove to be disastrous for thousands of Gender Conflicted individuals desperately seeking corrective treatment.

We're requesting your valuable help and participation, providing written testimony (which will be provided to the general DSM review board, media and public), and expertise on the realities of Transsexual/Transgender, Intersexed Gender Identity."
