The
members of the '93 Triangle NC team will get their first
taste of international competition as the team will head
to Europe in August of 2008 for a 10-day tour of culture
and competition. Each summer, the rising U15 girls from
Triangle FC travel overseas as part of the TFC
International Program, which began three years ago when
the '89 Navy girls toured Iceland and Sweden. During
the tour, TFC competes against some of the worlds' best
in friendly matches at their hosts' home facilities.
Current '93 coach Ben Swain, who traveled to Holland,
Belgium and Germany with the '90 Navy girls, speaks of
the importance of the program.
"The experience of
the European tour is unlike anything I've ever been
through before. It's an amazing learning experience
with the culture and history, and it's nearly impossible
to come away from the experience without a sense of
being a part of something much bigger than yourself.
You grow together as a team, but you also realize you're
representing your club, your state, your country, and
even the sport of soccer. There's an air of importance
to your presence over there, and it's not something that
can be duplicated in any other area of youth soccer."
The destination for
the 2008 tour has yet to be finalized, but past trips
have taken TFC players to England, Iceland, Sweden,
Holland, Belgium and Germany. Teams have toured such
soccer landmarks as Ajax's Amsterdam Arena and Newcastle
United's St. James Park, and have visited the Tower of
London, Iceland's lagoons, and Cologne's famous
cathedral Der Dom. |
