Adjustable Height Standpipe (18" to 30")

Here is the basic description of the adjustable height Aqua-Silencer (aka Stockman Standpipe) Standpipe.  Just eliminate the height adjustment, if it is not applicable to your situation, for example you know your finished height or you have a siphon overflow.

Tools required:

Miter saw

Router (if you want to cut the hole quickly)

tap set for the adjustable height portion

drill

1/-20 thread tapping bit

Materials (I have my own cheap source for bulk fittings)

14" of 1" PVC pipe (thin wall)

14" to 22" of 1.25" PVC pipe (schedule 40)

2" to 1" reduction fitting

24" of 3/8" vinyl tubing (US Plastics)

1.25" end cap

1 1/4-20 nylon screw (1/2" long--US Plastics)

PVC or super glue

How to:

1. Cut a 1.25" pipe 17" in length.

2. Cut a square hole in either side about 2" down from the top. I use a router with a 1/2" cutting bit for this, although a miter saw will work.

3. Cut the reduction fitting in half with a miter saw (Alternatively, you can use a Dremel to sand out the lip of the fitting so that it will slide over the end of the pipe). This is sort of dangerous and I have had fittings explode on me.  No damage yet.  I use a jig to do this to make it safer.

4. Slide on the reduction fitting so that the bottom edge is even with the top edge of the square holes in the pipe. Glue in place with either super glue or PVC glue.

5. Glue on the 2" coupling fitting to the reduction fitting.

6. Put an end cap on the top with a 3/8" hole in it (Do Not Glue).

7. Stick a 2' section of flexible tubing into the hole. Just enough of the tubing to keep it in place--not so that it goes into the water (see picture).

8. Aprox. 1/2" from the bottom of the pipe drill a hole for a 1/4-20 tap (I don't know the size off hand). Tap the hole.  Screw in the screw.

9. Cut 14" or so of 1" pipe and insert it into the 1.25" pipe. Tighten the screw to hold the 1" pipe in place.

10. Put in place in the overflow. Slide up the outer pipe to the desired height, which would be about 1 to 1.5" from the top edge of the overflow box.

And there you have it.

If you don't have all the tools, materials, or time, then contact me and I will make you one.  I can make them cheaper and faster and with the right dimensions to make it work.
