2008 marks the 25th anniversary of Witness for Peace!
We’re proud of the movement we’ve built together over the years, working in solidarity with the people of Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia and Venezuela. We’ve engaged in the arduous work of transforming U.S> policies and the exhilarating work of transforming thousands of lives. We hope that this letter leaves you reflecting on your own fond memories of what the “Witness community” – a community of compassionate, spirited activists – has meant to you. Building Bridges of Hope: from the Southeast to Jalapa and Back Again. You have been an important part of the first 25-year of Witness for Peace. Whether you’ve led delegations or attended one talk on a regional speakers tour, attended a CITCA Retreat, we invite you to join us this year as we celebrate our victories, honor our past, and strategize for our future. There are many ways to celebrate with us:
- From June 12-20th, five simultaneous delegations will travel to Latin America with Witness for Peace – and you could be on one of them! The delegations will go to Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala and the site of the founding of Witness for Peace – Jalapa, Nicaragua. On each of these delegations, you will have the opportunity to share your solidarity with our partners who are still struggling for social and economic justice in their countries. Please consider joining Jeff Boyer, Dick Smith-Overman, Graymon Ward and I on a delegation to Nicaragua from June 12-20th. Contact Gail or Graymon at CITCA@bellsouth.net for details. Registration closes on May 1st. We need five more people to sign up!
- Immediately after the delegations’ return from the five countries, delegates and others will gather in Washington, D.C. on June 21-22nd for a 25th Anniversary Grassroots Conference, where we will share our experiences, re-connect with old friends, meet new activists from around the country, and hone the skills necessary to continue building an effective, vibrant grassroots movement. Issue workshops and skills trainings will fill this exciting weekend. The 25th Anniversary conference will be held at Georgetown University, and the celebration will take place at All Souls Unitarian Church, 1500 Harvard Street NW Wash DC. The cost of the conference is $60 and includes the entrance to the celebration. Register today! We hope to have a big group come to celebrate from the SE region.
