Myrmecodia tuberosa (Mt. Kinabalu)![]() Myrmecodia tuberosa is highly
variable species with a range extending from peninsular Malaysia to New Guinea. This plant is
descended from material collected in the Malaysian province of Sabah on the island of Borneo. Like
the wild M. tuberosa in adjacent Sarawak, this plant has white petioles.
The first few internodes at the base of the stem are noticeably narrowed and elongate relative to the
flowering nodes higher on the stem. The tuber has unbranched spines (below left) and arcs of
entrance holes. The stem (below right) has somewhat obscure clypeoli and alveoli that are densely filled
with dry bracts. Flowers and fruit emerge from the alveoli. This plant may be M. tuberosa 'Armata'
or M. tuberosa 'Bracteata' (Huxley and Jebb, 1993).
Compare to M. tuberosa from New Britain.
