Ken Larsen's web site - My trip to Key West

December 22, 2007 - January 1, 2008:  I went on an 11 day 2130 mile car trip to Key West, Florida and back.  I drove down and back with a friend.  A friend of that friend flew in from New Orleans and stayed with us during our five days in Key West.  Below are some pictures.

Tybee Island Lighthouse just east of Savannah, Georgia.

On December 22nd we drove from Chapel Hill to Savannah.  It took us almost nine hours ... three hours longer than normal due to heavy pre-Christmas highway traffic.

We stayed two nights in Savannah at a Day's Inn.

On December 24th we drove from Savannah to Key West.  This took us almost 12 hours ... attributable to heavy Miami area traffic and getting lost a few times.  We arrived just before midnight.

Key West chicken.  Key West has a large population of wild chickens that roam all over the place ... like pigeons in other parts of the United States.

We spent five days in Key West:  December 25-29.  I swam in the ocean on the first three of those days.  The mid-day air temperature was around 80 F.  When we left Chapel Hill on December 22nd the air temperature was 47 F.

We stayed three nights (December 24-26) in a small motel that was just one block from Duval street and one block from the ocean.  The room rate jumped from $119 to $229/night on the 26th, the beginning of the "peak season".  For the 27th and 28th we stayed as a roomier but cheaper motel on the east side of the island.

Me on a Key West beach.  I went swimming on Christmas Day.

Our primary activities in Key West were swimming and cruising Duval Street.  We also toured the Truman complex.

Banyan tree outside summer homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford in Ft. Myers, Florida.  This is a "must-see" attraction for anyone visiting that area.

December 30th:  We toured the Edison/Ford complex and then did some biking on the northern end of Pine Island.

December 31st:  After spending the night in Sarasota we explored Anna Marie Island with our bikes ... where we witnessed a wedding on the beach.  Then, we reluctantly began our long drive home via route 75 and through downtown Atlanta.

We were driving on route 75 three hours south of Atlanta when 2008 rolled in.  We resumed our journey on the 1st and arrived home in Chapel Hill shortly before 11 PM.  The temperature was a frigid 35 F.  How we longed to be back in Key West!
