Ken Larsen’s web site – American Tobacco Trail
The American Tobacco Trail (ATT) is a "Rails to Trails" success story for neighboring Durham, Chatham, and Wake counties. They collaborated to convert a former railroad track to a wonderful 22 mile (and growing) trail that can be enjoyed by joggers, walkers, bikers, and (on some sections) horse riders. Here's the official web site of the American Tobacco Trail: http://www.triangletrails.org/ATT.HTM
Below are some pictures of the 16 mile long section that runs from the Jordan Lake area 1.9 miles south of route 64 in Wake County to Massey Chapel Road just south of Southpoint Mall in Durham. It's complete except for two "yet to be finished" bridges in the Chatham County section.
All pictures are looking north.

Entrance to the southern end of the
ATT, 1.9 miles south of the intersection of routes 751 and 64. The Wake County section of the trail is 6.4 miles long and is 100% complete. The path surface in Wake County is "compacted screenings" meaning that it's very smooth ... nothing larger than a small pebble. |

Section of trail between Wake county
line and New Hope Church Road in Chatham County. The Chatham
County and south Durham County sections of the trail are
"Grass/Gravel/Clay" surface. It's fairly level, but there are many
1/2 inch diameter stones which make up the "gravel". The Chatham County section of the trail is 4.6 miles long and is incomplete. Missing are two bridges ... one for Panther Creek; the other for Northeast Creek. |

"Future bridge" over Panther Creek at location "j" on map 4 - the leftover skeleton of what was a railroad bridge. This section is not passable. |
