Chris at deskFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s the difference between an Interior Designer and a Decorator?
An Interior Designer must complete a rigorous college curriculum to learn how to seamlessly integrate theory, design and technology. This allows a Designer to accurately draft room layouts and render drawings that let you "see" the results before you start. Furthermore, designers belong to ASID or other governing bodies that require minimum professional standards and continuing education. Decorators do not necessarily possess advanced design skills, require no formal training, and are not regulated by governing bodies. In fact, anybody who thinks they have a flair for staging a room can assume the Decorator title.

Choose an Interior Designer that is educated, certified and has demonstrated experience in the field.

How do I choose the right Designer for my project?
First, you should find a designer that you feel comfortable with. After all, as a team we are going to design your most personal space - your home. So a designer should always listen to your ideas and never impose her own design preferences on you. In addition, you might ask these key questions to help guide your decision:
  • Are you a registered designer or a member of any professional associations?
  • May I see samples of your portfolio?
  • May I call a few of your references?
  • What Services do you offer?
  • When can you complete the work?

Can hiring an Interior Designer save me money?
Yes. Every project has three parameters: Scope (what is done), Schedule and Cost. A good designer helps a client balance these three constraints and always strives to stay within budget. There are several ways that Christine can you save considerable expense:

  1. Her vast experience can help you avoid “redos.” For example, have you ever painted a room only to find that the color doesn’t quite work the way you intended? Christine can help you choose proper color hues that harmonize from room to room. Of course, individual tastes differ and she will respect your final decision on any wall color.
  2. She may be able to pass along trade discounts on furniture, fabrics and accessories.
  3. She works with proven subcontractors and vendors who uphold high standards for professional conduct, craftsmanship and value.
  4. She offers flexible payment terms: an hourly rate or flat fee plans are available.
