SAMPLE LETTER #1
Date
Dear Senate Representative ____:
House Representative ____:
Congressional District Representative ____:
As a concerned ferret owner in North Carolina, I would like to see the following changes and additions in our state laws:
(1) Ferrets be classified as domestic,
(2) Imrab-3 recognized as an effective vaccine against rabies in ferrets, and
(3) A mandatory 10-day quarantine in bite incidents.
Ferrets have been domesticated for several thousand years, even before cats. They are the 3rd pet of choice in the United States with the order being cats, dogs, ferrets. The Imrab-3 vaccine has been effectively used for years in cats and dogs and the U.S.D.A. has approved it effective for use in ferrets. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recommended that all vaccinated ferrets involved in a bite case be quarantined for 10 days just like cats and dogs.
The state needs to recognize ferrets as domestic (not wild), the effectiveness of the Imrab-3 vaccine and institute the 10 day quarantine period. When these changes are made into law, then ferret owners can relax and enjoy their pet of choice.
I realize your time is limited and thank you for your attention to my requests. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
Sincerely,
(signature)
