Medicinal whiskey was given to the wounded as a "stimulant" against shock. It was also used as a solvent for making tinctures (medicines dissolved in alcohol). Medicinal alcohol was often diverted to non medical uses!

Hardtack was fed to wounded soldiers when commissary food was not available. Unlike the more industrialized North, the South relied mostly on fresh provisions.
