1. Wounded soldiers were brought to the Regimental Field Hospital by litter bearers called the "Ambulance Corps". Ambulance Corps soldiers in the Union Army were permanently assigned, in the Confederate Army they were temporarily detailed for this duty. They were distinguished from line soldiers by a red band or red card worn on the front of their hats saying "AMBULANCE CORPS". This prevented their being shot at by the enemy, or being derided as "shirkers" by their own army. Most wounded soldiers walked to the treatment stations. Those who could not could only be taken off the field by the ambulance corps troops. Infantry soldiers were not allowed to stop and render assistance to their compatriots until after the engagement was over. |
