Heraldry in History

Top of Page

In the period in which we play the heralds and their jobs evolved. In the beginning they were bards and singers that would sing about the big doin's in the next town or big city. During the course of this they would sing the praises of one knight or another. Well the knights liked this and would give them presents, and then later they would pay them.

At roughly the same period, when the knights weren't fighting in a battles, they would have "tournaments" to test they prowess. The only problem was they would actually fight, so people were actually dying. The king was not pleased that his knights were killing each other, so a system of "safer" tournaments were started. Almost from the very beginning, the heralds were involved.

The knights had to be identified in battle and later in the tournaments. So over a couple of centuries, what we refer to as book heralds evolved. They came to run the tournaments, keep track of the heraldic devices of the knights, design new arms for people, and serve as the public address systems at tournaments and in courts.

Since they ran the tourneys and the tourneys were held in many different places the heralds were able to pass back and forth over borders even during war time.Due to this ability, the heralds finally became the "month piece" for the king, ambassadors. The heralds evolved into diplomats.

Heraldry in the SCA

In the SCA the heralds serve 3 purposes;

  • book heralds - the heralds help the populace choose and register the names and heraldic devices, and answer all questions about heraldry
  • field heralds - the heralds act as the public address system at events, making announcements and calling tournaments (they are also known as tournament heralds)
  • court heralds - the crowns hold public courts at most events and the heralds run them and make all of the announcements
