Harpers Ferry from Maryland Heights
My "lapless"
laptop setup, hands free.
I'm married with two grown daughters. I have recently retired after 35 years in the software development business; most of it with IBM. I spend lots of time on some hobbies. Since I was not allowed to actually touch code during my former jobs; I tend to include some form of coding in my hobbies. I'm also very interested in the American Civil War, photography and, recently, mapping. I've completed two semester towards a certificate in GIS at North Carolina State University. Visit my academic website. Even though I'm a yankee by birth, I've lived below the Mason-Dixon line since my first full time job. I haven't taken sides. Over the past fifteen years I've managed to combine my interest in software development, photography and mapping with my Civil War hobby.
I
continue to read extensively about the Civil War with an emphasis on
first hand
accounts. I particularly enjoy discovering a diary and trying to
find the
places described in the diary. Over the years I've gotten myself
lost on
any number of occasions in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland,
Pennsylvania,
Georgia, Tennessee and even Mississippi. In the process I have
visited
all of the major Eastern Civil War battlefields and very many of the
secondary
ones. I, of course, have my favorites. My big three
are
Antietam/Sharpsburg, Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry. Seven years
ago
I
successfully developed code that I use in my travels and battlefield
tours.
It has allowed me to combine the Civil War, photography, mapping and
coding. The
bonus is that I never get lost anymore.
This web site contains the details of my family and hobbies. If you're interested it will allow you to download the software that I use. I worked with a number of user on the moving map software. All were successful in getting it up and running on OS/2. I ported the moving map software to Windows and have been running it ever since. Not all the support programs have been ported yet. They're on my list of things to do.
